What to Watch

Thursday’s events are loaded with Colorado athletes, none bigger than Crested Butte native and CU alum Emma Coburn in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, the night’s final event. Coburn broke the American record in May at the Prefontaine Classic and has positioned herself as one of the medal contenders in the event in Rio. Also in the race are former CU runner and 2012 Olympian Shalaya Kipp.

CU alumna Jenny Simpson, the two-time defending U.S. champion at 1500 meters who lives and trains in Boulder with Coburn, will race in the event’s first round. She will be joined by former CU runners Sara Sutherland and Sara Vaughn, the latter of whom is making a late-career comeback.

And another CU alum, Laura Thweatt, has her last shot at making the Olympic team, starting with women’s 5K qualifying, after finishing fifth in the 10K on Saturday. Also racing in the event will be Englewood-born Jessica Tebo, a former CU runner.

Kara Winger, the American record holder in the javelin , is aiming to make her third Olympic team, starting with qualifying. … Russ Winger, who graduated from Pine Creek High School, will be competing in the men’s discus along with Lance Brooks, who lives in Denver and won the trials in 2012; CU assistant coach Casey Malone; ԻMason Finley, who graduated from Buena Vista High School and the University of Wyoming. Finley set the national high school record in the event.

Colorado State alumna Janay DeLoach was expected to compete in the 100 meter hurdles, but withdrew to “play it safe and not (take) any chances before the Olympics,” her coach, Karim Abdel Wahab, told The Denver Post. She has already qualified for Rio in the long jump and had been struggling with an injury to her right jumping foot. … CU’s Ben Saarel, who broke Alan Culpepper’s 1996 school record this year in the 1500, will begin with qualifying in the event. His best this season is 3:38.40.
