A wind shift in the afternoon Thursday will keep temperatures below the high temperatures seen Wednesday, according to forecasters.
On Wednesday, the high at Denver International Airport was 96. It was 100 degrees in Sterling.
“We have a cold front pushing down from Wyoming,” said Natalie Gusack, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Boulder. “The plains were terribly hot yesterday.”

West and southwest winds will give way to north northwesterly winds in the afternoon. The breeze from the north could gust up to 16 mph.
The high temperature on Thursday is still expected to reach 90 degrees, Gusack said.
Temperatures will rise to a high of about 91 degrees Friday, Saturday and Sunday, according to the NWS.
There is a 20 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms in the afternoon on Friday and a 10 percent chance of afternoon storms on Saturday.
It is expected to be sunny but not as hot the first part of next week, with highs of 85 on Monday, 86 on Tuesday and 88 on Wednesday.
