A hiker fell into a crevice in an ice cave near Aspen Friday and was rescued by emergency responders.
The incident happened in the Ice Caves section of the Grottos Day Use Area, east of Aspen off of Colorado Highway 82, according to a Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office media release.
The sheriff’s office was notified of the fall at about 12:10 p.m., and 14 Mountain Rescue Aspen volunteers were mobilized for the mission.
The victim, a Canadian man from British Columbia, fell about 35 feet and suffered serious multiple injuries, the release said.
Medical personnel from the Aspen Ambulance District tended to the victim as the rescue team and bystanders used ropes to set up a technical “Up Haul” system to lift the man to safety.
A waiting ambulance took the man to the Aspen Valley Hospital.
