Firestone residents will decide whether to approve financing for a new public safety facility for the town’s police department when they vote in November.

The Board of Trustees directed the town’s staff to place the initiative on the ballot.

“We know that keeping Firestone safe is a full-time job,” Mayor Paul Sorensen, said in a release. “With the growth that our community continues to experience, we need a more adequate facility for our officers so that they can be safe as they protect our community.”

In June, the Board approved a contract with Roth Sheppard Architects for professional architecture services for programming, site selection, design and related services. The architectural firm is working to finalize a draft building design that will include structural, mechanical, electrical and civil goals and a cost estimate.

The Firestone Police Department currently operates out of Town Hall, built in 1999. The office police now occupy in the building was designed to accommodate only five staff members.
