Re: July 16 letters to the editor.

Letter-writer Molly Pitts wrote, “Drought and climate change are contributing factors to catastrophic wildfires. So are beetle infestations … .” I’d like to point out that the Western droughts are climate change, and pine beetle infestations are too. Pine beetles have become an epidemic in the Rockies because global warming means temperatures are no longer cold enough to kill them off during the winter.

Global warming will continue to worsen until we begin to attack the root cause: greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels. Major economists worldwide agree that carbon pricing is the best way to fight global warming. Revenue-neutral carbon pricing, where all the money from a carbon tax is distributed directly to the taxpayers, will mean it won’t cost taxpayers or consumers anything.
