Re: July 2 guest commentary.
Thank you to Michael Harris for his guest commentary regarding Christo’s Floating Piers and other destructive “art” projects. We live in the Bighorn Sheep Canyon along Highway 50 and have been opposed to Christo’s Over the River project for many years. It will not create a “gentle disturbance” for a few days. Rather, a massive construction operation for three-plus years. During that time, those of us who live in and drive through the canyon will be subjected to traffic nightmares and disruption to our lives.
As if we needed another reason to say no to Christo, the recent Hayden Creek wildfire should be the final rejection. We are all so grateful to the firefighters who worked on the fire and protected homes. They have an overwhelming job with the added frustration of dealing with the traffic on Highway 50 as they go to and from the staging area in Salida. Some chose to sleep on the fire lines so they do not have to face that drive.
This should send a signal to those who approve Christo’s project that the canyon does not need the estimated 250,000 people a day who would come to look at the sheets. What if there was another wildfire during that time? It does not bear thinking about.
