Runners posed for portraits immediately after finishing the annual Hardrock 100 ultra distance run through the San Juan Mountains on July 16, 2016, in Silverton, Colorado. The 100.5-mile loop course takes runners from Silverton to Telluride to Ouray and Lake City before returning to Silverton.

This year’s winners — — while the final runner, Kris Kern, finished in 47:45:00, nearly two full days of movement to cover the course, which gains roughly 33,000 feet and descends the same amount. The early photos of this focus on the elite, sponsored runners and end with those who are every day people, who carry other full-time jobs yet come to this event each year hoping to finish either for the first time or faster than they did the year before. Their glory is in the process, not the final time.
