It is not surprising that Senate candidate Darryl Glenn blotted out the memory of the violent incident after which his father accused him of assault. One of the ways that children who grow up with batterers survive — when they do — is by putting trauma behind them and striving for a better life. It is tragic to think that a father’s violent acts can extend beyond the grave to further undermine his son.
While I will not be voting for Glenn, I think compassionate people will extend understanding to a man who, as an 18-year-old, tried to defend his mother and was himself victimized by a bully.

Having gone to school with Darryl Glenn first at Doherty High School in Colorado Springs and later at the U.S. Air Force Academy, I feel uniquely qualified to come to his defense. I know Darryl to be a man of honor and integrity. I completely believe his explanation regarding the events of Nov. 20, 1983. Your smug editorial comments attempting to portray him as something other than a decent, honest American are misguided and not appreciated. Darryl Glenn is a man of character and would be an excellent choice to represent Colorado’s interests in the U.S. Senate.
