Re: July 27 news story.
I moved to Denver at the time that urban renewal was “the thing.” Historic buildings in Lower Downtown became parking lots for the sake of “progress.” The current discussion concerning the beautiful granite pavers on the 16th Street Mall reminds me of those tragic times when we failed to see the benefit of preserving Denver’s history. Yes, repair and cleaning are needed for the pavers, as such maintenance seems to have been neglected over the years. But should we forsake the pavers for something less desirable? I think not. We should instead be wanting to preserve and repair something that is beautiful and designed by one of the world’s foremost architects. We should be proud that 30-some years ago, there was such foresight.
