Back off an off-day, Broncos looking sloppy, still bruised and battered

Even coming off an off-day, the Broncos practiced Wednesday with a bruised and battered list of injuries. More importantly, they played sloppy enough to get yelled at by their coach.

“First few periods were rough, especially for the offense,” quarterback Trevor Siemian said. “A lot of balls on the ground.”

Seven regulars did not participate in preseason drilling at Dove Valley, headed by cornerback Kayvon Webster. With a wrapped left knee, Webster ran through side work with a trainer, away from the team. Webster is the fastest player on Denver’s roster, several teammates have said. But rookie wide receiver Kalif Raymond might push him for that title.

Two offensive linemen sat out too: guards Ty Sambrailo (elbow) and Max Garcia (rolled his ankle during a walk-through). And center Sam Brenner continues to recover from a severe concussion suffered last week. The line was also missing tight end John Phillips (ankle). Wide receiver Marlon Brown (back) also did not practice.

The Broncos welcomed the return of Ronnie Hillman, who tweaked his back after a thudding hit from linebacker Zaire Anderson last week.

But Hillman at one point was yelled at by coach Gary Kubiak, who sent pulled him off the field for not hustling during a drill. Hillman was replaced by Kapri Bibbs.

Nose tackle Sylvester Williams and defensive end Vance Walker also returned from injuries.

After a scheduled off-day Tuesday, the Broncos ramped up their preparations Wednesday. A full-look, 11-on-11 period pitted quarterback Mark Sanchez against Denver’s first-team defense. Between Sanchez, Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch, the Broncos’ offense focused for a lengthy spell on rollouts. But none of them threw the ball with much precision.

Only eight days before their first preseason game, Aug. 11 at Chicago against the Bears, the Broncos continue to cycle through quarterbacks without a clear No. 1. But Sanchez, with a veteran presence, has grabbed a clear advantage.

“Today was a real good lesson about coming off an off-day. We hit a little lull in practice,” Sanchez said. “Coach Kubes kind of took the reigns and fixed it.”
