Since the modern Olympics began in 1896, tradition has dictated that a different city be awarded each Games. For many host cities and their nations, landing the Olympics is both a blessing and a curse.
On one hand, the worldwide exposure is a great opportunity for the hosts to showcase their culture and boost their global standing, as well as create temporary construction jobs and boost local and national pride.
On the other hand, huge cost overruns and other problems are often the norm, and once the Games are over, many of the venues are never used again.
Some have proposed for the Olympics — one site for the Summer Games and one for the Winter Games.
