The El Paso County jail passed an audit of federal standards under the Prison Rape Elimination Act, the county announced Tuesday, exceeding eight and meeting 33 of the 43 standards.
The remaining two were not applicable.
The standards were established in 2012 as part of an effort to “prevent, detect, and respond to prison rape,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
The audit indicates that “El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Detention Bureau staff have actively worked to achieve compliance with the PREA standards.” Inmates are exposed to information about PREA in a variety of ways, including posters throughout the facility and individual screenings. Inmates were aware of how to report concerns as well as the resources available to them, according to the audit.
