Re: Aug. 3 Cass R. Sunstein column.

How refreshing it was to read Cass R. Sunstein’s column in last Friday’s Post. Sunstein actually read the Constitution! Too bad our elected officials haven’t. They swear to support and defend it before entering their respective offices, but they ignore its basic functions: Congress legislates, presidents execute and Courts adjudicate. It has worked for hundreds of years.

Now they hire specialists to decide how we should live by establishing rules to organize, supervise and subsidize our daily activities all with borrowed money, and without the consent of the people. Government must give the people credit for being able to take care of themselves.

Is it entirely unreasonable to adopt Thomas Jefferson’s philosophy expressed in his first inaugural address? “[A] wise and frugal Government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government … .”
