Re: Aug. 2 letters to the editor.

The brave Khizr Khan is absolutely correct that Donald Trump has never sacrificed anything (except his decency). However, as to making sacrifices during these current wars in which we are engaged, with the exception of the men and women who voluntarily choose to be in harm’s way to protect our country and their loved ones and families, I dare say 99.9 percent of us have not sacrificed anything. In fact, as civilians,we have not been asked to sacrifice anything for our country since World War II. Nor have we done all we should to support those who return home alive, as well as those who come home in caskets and their families. Maybe this event will encourage many of us to do something more to support our troops and their families. I hope so.

My family (three generations) recently took a trip to Washington, D.C. We spent most of a day at Arlington National Cemetery, jumping on and off the tram to check out various areas. Everywhere we looked were gently rolling, green, tree-shaded expanses with white tombstones as far as the eye could see. These are the final resting places of thousands of men and women who have served our country in the military. Some of the tombstones had religious symbols on them — Christian crosses, Muslim crescents, and others. For Donald Trump to disparage the grieving mother of a fallen warrior because of her religion is beyond any shred of decency. (He, a member of the rich and privileged class, apparently avoided military service during the Vietnam War. Bone spurs? Really?)
