Bret Butler
Boulder County Sheriff's Office

A former U.S. Navy midshipman who was on probation for engaging in sexually explicit online exchanges with underage girls was arrested by Boulder police last week after investigators discovered he once again was communicating with young girls.

Bret Butler, 25, has been charged with two counts of internet sexual exploitation of a child and sexual exploitation of a child — second offense.

Butler pleaded guilty in 2014 to one count of sexual exploitation of a child for posing as a juvenile female online to get other underage females to send him sexually explicit photos.

As a condition of his plea deal with Boulder prosecutors, Butler was sentenced to 10 years of sex offender intensive supervised probation.

According to an arrest affidavit, probation officers who were conducting a random property search of Butler’s home discovered that he had an iPad and an internet-enabled video-gaming device, both of which are violations of his probation.

The items were confiscated, and Boulder police applied for a warrant to examine them. Investigators found that Butler had been posing as an underage male on the social-networking apps Snapchat and Kik to send and receive sexually explicit messages and photos with girls who appeared to be underage.
