A Colorado State Patrol sergeant was arrested Thursday in Firestone on suspicion of assaulting a woman in 2024, then threatening her after he learned of the warrant for his arrest, according to a Weld County Deputy District Attorney.

Ryan Holmes, 54, is facing charges of second-degree assault — strangulation and intimidation of a witness or victim, online court records show.

A woman told police Holmes grabbed her by her throat and lifted her off the ground during an argument in December 2024, according to Weld County Deputy District Attorney Carolyn O’Hara. The woman decided to report the incident to police after Holmes got upset again a few days ago, O’Hara said in a Friday afternoon bond hearing.

After learning of the warrant for his arrest Thursday, Holmes called the woman and said, “I’m gonna (expletive) up your life if you don’t recant,” according to O’Hara.

O’Hara had asked the court to consider a $50,000 cash or surety bail, citing a “heightened concern for victim safety.” The defense asked for a personal recognizance bond, or a $5,000 cash or surety bond.

Weld County Court Judge Michele Meyer set a $20,000 cash or surety bail and issued a mandatory domestic violence protection order.

Holmes, who has worked for Colorado State Patrol since 1998, was not on duty during the reported incident and has been put on administrative leave, according to a Thursday afternoon .

“These allegations are very serious, and we support the Firestone Police Departmentap investigation,” the release states.
