Acting Erie Police Chief Kim Stewart will officially take on the department’s top job Sept. 16, replacing Marco Vasquez who retired last week.

Stewart takes on the 28-person department after a 25-year career in law enforcement, the last three as operations commander in Erie. A veteran of the U.S. Army, she began her career in Boulder in 1990 and spent a number of years with the Colorado Police Department. She holds a masters degree in criminal justice administration.

“We are in the fortunate position to be able to draw from our experienced senior leadership team to fill this role,” town Administrator A.J. Krieger said in a statement issued Wednesday. “The future of the Erie Police Department is in competent, capable and steady hands. Kim is exceptionally qualified to lead our Department.”

Vasquez was a Denver police veteran and had been the state’s lead medical marijuana investigator before taking the reins in Erie in 2013.
