Vandals trampled garden plots and knocked over bee hives at Second Start Community Garden in Longmont.

Volunteer gardeners discovered the damage on Tuesday and Friday, according to Longmont police reports.

Shirley Goff said vandalism to the 20-year-old garden occurs at least once every year, though this is the first time in a decade the bees have been touched.

Longmont police Sgt. Matt Cage said officers will conduct extra patrols. “We’re going to do our best to enforce the no trespassing in there,” he said.

To fend off any future damage, Goff said organizers have changed the lock codes on the gates and have been talking about possible surveillance options.
