A 65-year-old woman was taken to a hospital with nonlife threatening injuries Sunday afternoon after an accident at the intersection of South Havana Street and East Alameda Avenue  involving an Aurora Fire Department vehicle.

In a news release, police said the Aurora Fire vehicle, a marked Ford F350 truck, driven by Battalion Chief Jon Hill, 49, was responding to an emergency call for service with lights and siren activated and was headed north on Havana.  As Hill entered the intersection, he was broadsided by a westbound Toyota Corolla, driven by Freda Adjei of Aurora.

Adjei was unresponsive and was extricated from the vehicle.  She was taken to a local hospital and later determined not to have suffered any life threatening injuries, police said.  Chief Hill was also taken to a local hospital to be evaluated and was later released.

The Aurora Police said investigators “believe the proximate cause of this crash was Adjei’s failure to yield the right of way to an emergency vehicle.”

Aurora police said on Twitter that some lanes were closed after the Sunday afternoon accident. At least one person was reported injured.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
