When the Broncos run
Broncos running back C.J. Anderson hasn’t let his new contract diminish his motivation. This year more than ever, he is out to prove he belongs in the conversation when discussing the NFL’s elite backs. There are not many better challenges to start the season than a Panthers defense that gave up the fourth-fewest rushing yards in the NFL last season. The Broncos’ offensive line is expected to be better, but it has a tough challenge against Carolina’s defensive line. Edge: Panthers
When the Panthers run
Cam Newton’s dual-threat capability, combined with power back Jonathan Stewart for Carolina, presents an unusual challenge for Denver. The Broncos were able to stuff Carolina early in the Super Bowl, forcing it to abandon the run. The Panthers have made it clear that establishing the run early Thursday is a priority. Derek Wolfe is one of the NFL’s best run-stopping defensive ends and the head of a strong front that will have to win its one-on-one battles. Edge: Broncos
When the Broncos pass
It’s up to Gary Kubiak and the other Broncos’ coaches to create a game plan that doesn’t expose quarterback Trevor Siemian to the teeth of the Panthers’ defense. If the Broncos run the ball early, they can establish manageable down and distances. Siemian should lean on receivers Demaryius Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders and Virgil Green to make plays. Carolina fields a fairly inexperienced secondary, but its front seven makes passing difficult. Edge: Panthers
When the Panthers pass
The return of wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin is expected to spark the Panthers’ passing game. Carolina likes to run play-action off an established run game to open up tight end Greg Olsen across the middle or wideouts Ted Ginn and Philly Brown deep. The Broncos’ secondary and pass rush were both the best in the NFL last season. Chris Harris and Aqib Talib play strong man coverage on the outside, allowing Von Miller and Denver’s pass rushers to get home. Edge: Broncos
Special teams
Broncos kicker Brandon McManus hasn’t been as accurate this summer as he was last season, when he went 30-of-35, but it’s not time to panic. Panthers kicker Graham Gano has been solid. The difference comes at punter. Denver is sending out a rookie in Riley Dixon, who has struggled with consistency this summer. Carolina recently traded for three-time all-pro punter Andy Lee. Panthers returner Ted Ginn is a touchdown threat. Edge: Panthers.
