A record-breaking 980 couples tied the knot during August in Denver County, marking the most marriage licenses ever issued there in a single month.
The August rush keeps Denver on pace to surpass last year’s record of 7,339 marriage licenses. Part of the surge may be linked the legalization of same-sex marriages. Although the clerk and recorder’s office doesn’t track marriages by gender, it notes that civil unions have fallen off sharply.
The office issued 761 civil union licenses in 2013, but only 19 were issued last year and only 12 so far this year.
Marriage-wise, August continues to be a favorite month, as it proved the busiest in eight of the last 12 years.
