The eyes were on the quarterback, and later on the defense. But it was C.J. Anderson who starred for the Broncos in a thrilling season-opening win over the Panthers on Thursday.

The Broncos’ veteran running back recorded a total 139 yards (92 rushing on 20 carries) with both a receiving touchdown and a rushing touchdown.

The Broncos entered the fourth quarter in a 10-point deficit, but Anderson’s two scores on successive drives put them in front.

The first was a 25-yard touchdown off a screen pass, to bring the Broncos within three.

“There was pressure and I knew that I had to get it to C.J. somehow, someway, and it would be a big play,” quarterback Trevor Siemian said. “He made a couple moves, and had a heck of a run and got it in there.”

The second was a one-yard run up the middle to put the Broncos in the lead, 21-17

“I’m just doing what I can,” he said. “There was a lot of negativity about myself and our offense. I’m just trying to do what I can to help out my teammates. The game tonight was kind of like, new offense, new quarterback, what are we going to do? They act like I didn’t have 100 yards all-purpose in the Super Bowl against the same team. That’s how I took it. And had fun tonight.”

Anderson became only the second Bronco in history to record both a rushing and a receiving touchdown in an opener in the last 30 years. (Quentin Griffin was the last to do it, in 2004.) He also moved up the Broncos’ record books, passing Olandis Gary, Gaston Green and Gerald Willhite and into 15th place on the team’s all-time list with 1,699 career rushing yards.
