Re: Sept. 3 Perspective article.
I concur with the view by Henry Dubroff and John J. Huggins that more needs to be done by Congress to stimulate the economy. However, I take issue with their view that impediments to achieving this goal were caused by a failure of the “leftist Democrats” to work with the less extreme elements of the Republican Party.
In my view, government inaction on economic stimulus and on other important matters rests entirely with the GOP. The problem with congressional inaction has not been caused by a failure of the Democrats to work with the Republicans, but rather a wholesale shift in the GOP position to the extreme right with the apparent sole purpose of ensuring that nothing of substance is accomplished by the Obama administration. Any GOP moderates in Congress have adopted extreme right views out of a fear of being defeated by Tea Party extremists in GOP primaries. Certainly there is no equivalent extreme shift by the Democratic Party to the left.
The authors as much acknowledge this view when they suggest that political reforms under a Hilary Clinton administration will only happen if she gets a Democratically controlled Senate and a “reduced Republican majority in the House.” Hopefully this will be the case, but until the GOP purges itself of extremism and accepts science as a fact, I expect the GOP will continue to attempt to block all efforts for progressive change.
