Colorado State’s Collin Hill is speechless — at least with the media — after his first start

FORT COLLINS — Colorado State’s leading passer (Collin Hill), leading rusher (Marvin Kinsey Jr.) and leading receiver (Michael Gallup) weren’t made available to the media after the Rams’ 47-21 win over Northern Colorado because Hill and Kinsey are true freshmen and Gallup, who also was banged up in the game, is in his first year in the program after transferring in from Butler County (Kan.) Community College.

Kinsey, who rushed for 97 yards on 18 carries with starter Dalyn Dawkins being held out with a minor injury, is from Riverwood High in Sandy Springs, Ga., and his presence in the Rams’ program is another indication of coach Mike Bobo and his staff’s recruiting reach into Southeastern Conference territory.

Hill caught Bobo’s attention when his team from Dorman High School in South Carolina attended a 7-on-7 camp at Georgia.

Gallup, who had five receptions for 88 yards, is from Monroe High School in Monroe. Ga., and is a junior after playing two years of junior college ball.

Singing Hill’s praises. The Rams who did speak to the media were impressed with Hill, who was 21-for-27 for 315 yards and four touchdowns against the FCS Bears in his first collegiate start.

“Our first drive kind of stalled out, but that second one we saw him throw it all over the yard, and he kind of did that all day,” said junior center Jake Bennett. “We see that every day in practice, but for him to come out and showcase it on a big stage is awesome for him and awesome for us. … I think we just needed a little boost at quarterback. Faton (Bauta) did it last week with running and Collin was able to do it this week with his arm.”

Is Bennett beyond thinking of Hill as an 18-year-old freshman?

“He’s right next to me in the locker room, so not quite,” Bennett said. “You saw him out there today. He took control and didn’t really have any stupid freshman mistakes. I’m sure those will come, but he’s a mentally tough guy who can overcome those.”

Bennett’s former teammate at Bear Creek High in Lakewood, wide receiver Olabisi Johnson, had three catches for 31 yards and one touchdown.

“Getting Collin in there was exciting for all of us,” Johnson said. “We know he can throw the ball, so I think we had a real good day. I think he has lot of confidence. Coming in as a true freshman, you don’t know about guys like that, but Collin showed us a lot of good things. He kept his composure all day. … He was throwing it up there and letting us go and get it.”
