Community walk Saturday will raise money for suicide, 7th-leading cause of death in Colorado

Six times as many people in Colorado die by suicide as die by homicide, making suicide the seventh-leading cause of death overall in this state.

The local chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention will hold a to raise money for community programs, research and advocacy. The “out of the darkness” community walk is from 10 a.m.-noon at Coors Field.

The event last year included 3,000 participants and raised $200,000, organizers said.

Gov. John Hickenlooper signed a new law in June to create an Office of Suicide Prevention within the state health department. On average, one person dies by suicide in Colorado every eight hours.
