Re: Sept. 13 business news story.
Minimum wage workers earn $332 per week pre-tax ($1,328 per month). Full-time minimum wage workers with no dependents are approximately $52 per month short of being eligible for food stamps. Full-time minimum wage workers with any dependents are eligible for food stamps.
Forbes reported that in 2014, Walmart workers cost taxpayers $6.2 billion in public assistance from food stamps, Medicaid and subsidized housing. Meanwhile, the company’s net worth is $144.7 billion. Your tax dollars go towards reducing hiring costs for businesses.
Minimum wage workers provide valuable services to our society. Janitors clean our communal spaces. Fast-food workers feed us when we are broke. Retail workers facilitate our consumer economy. No one who works a full-time job should be in poverty or depend on public assistance.
