: Sept. 20 news story.

While Americans were watching “Cheers” and wishing they had a place where “everybody knew their name,” Denverites already had that welcoming neighborhood hangout in the “Campus Lounge.” I worked there in its first decade and the staff indeed knew the names all of the many regular customers (and their drink of choice). I know I’m not alone in having many fond memories and great Campus stories. (Did you hear about the night we had a fire and couldn’t get the customers to leave?)

Owner Jim Wiste was savvy in understanding the appeal of the Campus’s “just this side of a dive bar” atmosphere and was always judicious in his “improvements.” Over the last 40 years, Wiste has seen and dealt with it all, always with charm and his great dry wit. We wish him the best; he and the Campus Lounge will surely be missed.
