Geno the St. Bernard went missing during the Cold Springs Fire from the 300 block of Sherwood Road. Charlie and Bretlyn Schmidtmann accept that their beloved pet likely gone for good.

The owners of Geno, a St. Bernard that went in Nederland this summer, believe the dog is alive and likely was picked up by a stranger. They’re now offering a reward for information leading to the recovery of Geno.

Geno has been missing since his owners Charlie and Bretlyn Schmidtmann — who are Nederland first responders — discovered their house at 325 Sherwood Road was one of eight destroyed in the 528-acre Cold Springs Fire near Nederland in July.

In a post on the , Geno’s owners say that while they have not yet found the dog, they believe he is alive.

“We believe that Geno made it out of his home alive and escaped to safety,” the post reads. “It is quite likely that a well meaning individual picked up Geno after he had spent a fair amount of time in the woods alone. He may have been a bit dirty and thinner than his normal 100 pound self (small for a St. Bernard!) leading his rescuer to think that he was abandoned or neglected.”
