A cross-county operation resulted in an arrest Saturday morning in what police are calling a case of “extreme domestic violence.”
Garfield County deputies responded to a report of a possible homicide at the Pinon Pines apartments in Glenwood Springs at 7:45 p.m. on Friday, where they found the body of a 24-year-old woman.
“As the investigation continued, Gustavo Olivo-Tellez was identified as a primary suspect in what appears to be a case of extreme domestic violence,” the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. “This act was made even more tragic given the fact that October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.”
Police followed unnamed clues to the Grand Junction area in Mesa County, just south of Garfield, where officials obtained the proper search warrants. Just after 8 a.m. Saturday morning, Olivo-Tellez was arrested by the Grand Junction SWAT Team following coordinated efforts with several agencies.
Olivo-Tellez was also charged with first degree murder following Friday nightap killing. He was wanted on a previous domestic violence warrant.
The Garfield County Coroner is waiting to release the name of the victim until after family members have been notified.
Garfield County officials credit collaboration between the Glenwood Springs Police Department, Garfield County Coroner’s Office and Colorado State Patrol, as well as the Colorado Bureau of Investigation for “their speedy response to the site of the shooting and for securing that site until a proper analysis of the scene could be made.”
