I understand that Colorado’s caucus and convention system this year was confusing and crowded and some people didn’t have the opportunity to participate. A presidential primary may address these issues. But the important question is why should the state of Colorado have to pay for any political party’s candidate selection process? The primary election is projected to cost $5.3 million shared between the state and counties for the 2020 primary; costs would likely increase every four years. And this is in addition to the primary election that is held to select candidates for Colorado offices. That is $5.3 million that could be better spent on education, infrastructure and human services. If the political parties want to select candidates through a primary election, let them foot the bill.
