Authorities in Mesa County are investigating after hikers found human remains Tuesday on Bureau of Land Management desert land northwest of Grand Junction.

On Wednesday, the county sheriff’s and coroner’s offices worked with Colorado Mesa University students studying forensics to recover the remains off 16 Road.

Officials are working to identify the remains. Investigators say they are reviewing missing person cases to see if the remains may be related.

“The circumstances surrounding the human remains will continue to be under investigation,” the sheriff’s office said.

Further details on the case were not released.
