Debating Colorado’s Amendment 71 and the need for stricter initiative rules (2 letters)

PUBLISHED: | UPDATED:
Getting your player ready...
Colorado's Amendment 71 would raise the bar on future constitutional amendments. In order to make the ballot, initiatives would need signatures from 2 percent of residents in every state Senate district. They would also need 55 percent of the vote to pass.

Martha McPherson, left, has Peter Volz sign a petition for a ballot initiative at the Boulder Farmers' Market in July 2016. Amendment 71 lifted the threshold for passage of constitutional amendments to 55 percent from a simple majority, and measures will now needsignatures from 2 percent of registered voters in all 35 state senate districts to get onto the ballot.

Amendment 71 makes it a lot more difficult to change the Colorado Constitution. If you review the big issues in the state, many are the result of amendments to the Constitution. Examples includethe Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights, the Gallagher amendment, and Amendment 23.

Does anyone believe that the average voter read (and understood) how these amendments would impact their lives? And yet, these amendments are profoundly affecting us individually and the state’s ability to most effectively provide for the well-being of its citizens.

It is time to stop the dysfunction caused by issues too complex for simple yes-or-no votesand let the legislature do its job. Vote “yes” on Amendment 71

The Pew Research Center, a highly trusted, non-partisan source for public opinion, has found that both Republicans and Democrats are equally concerned about the influence of money in politics. Amendment71 is constructed by and supported by big-money interests, including Democrats, Republicans and big business. Go to the Amendment 71 website to see for yourself.

If Amendment 71 passes, your voice will effectively be silenced unless you have massive amounts of money to petition all 35 state Senate districts and massive funding to promote it. Your vote against Amendment 71 will help to shut the door to the big-money interests and their agenda for Colorado. This letter is the only affordable way for me to advocate against Amendment 71.
