Re: Oct. 27 Chuck Plunkett column.

I commend your decision to stop publishing onlinereader polls. You are so right that the results are incredibly misleading. This is how a site like the Drudge Report can claim Donald Trump the landslide winner of a presidential debate based on a reader poll, presented to an audience which is 95percent in favor of Trump. Then Trumpgoes out on the campaign trail and cites this poll as proof that he won the debate. It is so skewed as to be dangerous.

Your newspaper — my newspaper, the one my parents subscribed to when I was a boy and that I read online every day — has taken a position that is honorable and necessary in this world of delusional reporting of news. Thank you for taking a stand for the sake of our democracy. Let us never forget that freedom of speech and freedom of the press are essential human rights that we are blessed to have protected in this country. With these rights comes the responsibility to serve the audience with integrity.

I was saddened to learn that Chuck Plunkett has made the decision to terminate The Denver Post’s opinion polls. I have always looked forward to responding to the polls and reading the results. The polls have been helpful in shaping my views of important issues.

I agree with Plunkett’sopinion that the polls are non-scientific; nevertheless, they do represent the views of a core group of those whoread the opinion pages. Now those voices have been silenced. This is just one more example of the steadily shrinking content of this newspaper.

I am not surprised that you want to eliminate the polls, as the results of many recent polls go against the paper’s beliefs. I voted on several of the polls that were of interest to me, and for the most part my vote agreed with the majority. My votes always reflected my true beliefs about the subject matter. I am sorry you have discontinued the polls.
