
Following is a look at the marquee games and individuals to watch this week in the second round of the Class 5A soccer state tournament, 5A volleyball regionals and 5A gymnastics state meet.
SOCCER
No. 11 Rangeview (13-2-1) at No. 6 Arapahoe (12-4), Wednesday 4:30 p.m., Littleton Public Schools Stadium: In a rematch of the team’s season opener, a match Arapahoe won 2-0, both teams come in with momentum from the first round, The Warriors beat a scrappy Aurora Central team, 3-1, and the Raiders thrashed Greeley West, 5-1.
No. 4 Broomfield (13-2-1) at No. 13 Legacy (11-4-1), Wednesday 6 p.m., Broomfield High School: The Eagles erased a 1-0 halftime deficit to squeak by No. 29 Gateway, 2-1, in the first round, and will have their hands full containing the classification’s top scorer in Lightning senior striker Tajon Buchanan (21 goals, 52 points).
No. 30 Fossil Ridge (6-9) at No. 14 Lincoln (12-4), Wednesday 3:15 p.m., Lincoln High School: The Sabercats pulled off a stunner with a 2-1 overtime victory over No. 3 Cherry Creek in the first round, and now turn their attention to a Lancers team led by junior striker Luis Castillo (10 goals).
VOLLEYBALL
Region 4, Saturday at Chatfield High School: No. 4 Chatfield (21-2) heads into the postseason coming off a 3-2 defeat of top-ranked Rock Canyon in the final match of the regular season, but will have to deal with a No. 21 Castle View (14-9) team that defeated the Chargers 3-2 on Sept. 12. Chatfield vs. Mountain Range at 3 p.m., Castle View vs. Mountain Range at 4:30 p.m., Chatfield vs. Castle View 6 p.m.
Region 5, Friday at Denver East High School: No. 5 Denver East is but will have to deal with the underseeded likes of No. 20 Highlands Ranch (15-8) and No. 32 Rangeview, which ran the table to a 10-0 record in the East Metro League. Denver East vs. Rangeview at 3:30 p.m., Highlands Ranch vs. Rangeview at 5:30 p.m., Denver East vs. Highlands Ranch at 7:30 p.m.
Region 7, Friday at Mountain Vista High School: No. 7 Mountain Vista (18-5) comes into the tournament but look out for No. 18 Grandview (14-9) to rally behind the play of junior Kylee Harr and senior Marina Schlaepfer. Mountain Vista vs. Boulder at 4 p.m., Grandview vs. Boulder at 6 p.m., Mountain Vista vs. Grandview 8 p.m.
GYMNASTICS
State gymnastics meet, Thursday through Saturday, Thornton High School: Pomona junior Kelsey Boychuk goes for a three-peat championship in the 5A all-around, while in the team competition Pomona (5A) and Niwot (4A) look to defend their state titles.
