An 11-year-old boy accused of stabbing Kyler Nipper with a pencil in their middle school hallway has been arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault, the Colorado Springs Police Department said Tuesday.
The boys are sixth-graders at Carmel Middle School in Harrison School District 2.
Police spokesman Lt. Howard Black said the Oct. 7 stabbing caused “a serious injury.” The incident left Kyler, 11, with a punctured lung that required trauma surgery, a temporary breathing tube and a weekend hospital stay, his family said.
Police consulted with the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, reviewed medical reports and interviewed witnesses, the victim and the victim’s family. The incident was not captured on surveillance footage.
The student who reportedly stabbed Kyler was suspended from school, according to a District 2 news release. He was arrested Monday, police said.
