Re: Oct. 28 editorial.
Instead of killing bears and cougars to help the mule deer population regenerate, why not have a two-year moratorium on hunting mule deer to give the deer time to recover? It would also give time for scientists and environmentalists to study whether it is human encroachment on their territory — like building homes, drilling for oil and gas, or even climate change — that is causing their population to drop. It could possibly have something to do with genetics — too much inbreeding because of a decrease in their domain. Before humans came to the area, there was a natural balance. The deer have a better chance of escaping bears or cougars than a hunter with his sophisticated guns or bow and arrows. Yes, it would decrease revenues for the hunting business, but what is more important — money or preserving nature?
