John Stevenson, who stepped down as dean of the University of Colorado’s Graduate School over the summer, had been found responsible for retaliating against a female professor several months before he resigned that post and returned to teaching and research, according to documents newly released by the Boulder campus.

Additionally, David Glimp, a former chair of CU’s English department, was found responsible for violating university policy by failing to report Stevenson’s action to campus authorities. Glimp stepped down from that post in July, a few months after the Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance found he had violated CU’s mandatory reporting policy.

The retaliation and policy violation findings stem from a 2015 email Stevenson sent to Glimp regarding English professor Katie Little, according to documents obtained by the Daily Camera under the Colorado Open Records Act.

The university declined to release the email message to the Camera, saying it is part of a personnel file and that it “would do substantial injury to the public interest,” according to Scott Bocim, CU’s custodian of records.

Although the contents of Stevenson’s email to Glimp are not known, CU’s lawyers described the message as “unfortunate” and “poor in taste” in the university’s response to a discrimination complaint Little filed with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission last year.
