Deputies responding to an early morning report that a burglar had been shot discovered that no one had been wounded, but the alleged burglar’s house was ablaze.
Aron Miramontes, 28, was jailed early Tuesday morning for investigation of criminal mischief, second-degree burglary and attempted first-degree criminal trespass, said Matt Turner, spokesman for the Weld County Sheriff’s Department.
“It started out as a weird call,” Turner said of the 3:30 a.m. 911 call.
Miramontes made the 3:30 a.m. call. He told a dispatcher he had been shot and was outside his neighbor’s house on the 33000 block of Colorado 392 on the outskirts of Gill.
When deputies called the homeowner to find out what had happened, the person said someone was trying to break into their home.
“You can imagine there was a little bit of confusion when we headed out there,” Turner said.
Although Miramontes had claimed he had been shot, deputies learned he hadn’t been. No one even had a gun, Turner said. It also appeared that Miramontes was intoxicated “on an unknown substance.”
Deputies then noticed there were flames shooting out of the windows of a nearby home.
“We went out there expecting one thing and ended up dealing with something altogether different,” Turner said.
Firefighters were then immediately dispatched to the structure fire at Miramontes’ house.
