A man was shot and critically injured early Thursday morning in a carjacking in which the suspect stole a red Chevrolet Camaro, got into a police chase and later ditched the car in Centennial.

The victim was taken to a hospital with critical injuries. Another man who was with the victim at the time was not hurt.

The robbery happened at 2 a.m. near the intersection of Morrison Road and East Kentucky Avenue, said Doug Schepman, Denver police spokesman.

A male gunman accosted two men and shot one of the victims before stealing the car, Schepman said.

Denver police officers spotted the car in southeast Denver. A chase ensued that went onto southbound Interstate 25 because there were few cars on the highway, Schepman said. The suspect sped away from the police patrol car and officers lost sight of the vehicle, Schepman said.

The suspect ditched the car on the 6800 block of South Glencoe Avenue and officers found it there around 4 a.m.

Sheriff’s deputies from Douglas and Arapahoe counties and the Colorado State Patrol set up a perimeter and searched the area for the suspect. The unsuccessful search was called off at 6:20 a.m., Schepman said.

Police are continuing to investigate.
