Game plan
When the Broncos run
Denver’s offense goes how its running game goes for most games. Running backs Devontae Booker and Kapri Bibbs are the catalysts to spark a wounded offense, but it’ll be the offensive line’s responsibility to create holes for them. Moving the chains and getting into third-and-short situations would be a good start against the NFL’s 23rd-ranked run defense. New Orleans is middle of the pack in stopping the run, but will make that its priority. Edge: Saints.
When the Saints run
New Orleans ran for a season-high 248 yards against the 49ers last week behind the power duo of Mark Ingram and Tim Hightower. This provides a serious challenge for a Denver defense, which has been shredded against the run in recent weeks and will be without top run stuffer Derek Wolfe. The Saints likely will follow other team’s plans of establishing the run first versus Denver. Edge: Saints.
When the Broncos pass
The Broncos’ passing offense seems to regress weekly. Sunday might provide a chance to erase bad memories and take a step forward. The Saints have the NFL’s worst passing defense, giving up 300 passing yards per game. Trevor Siemian has one 300-yard passing game this season, but his deep shots to Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders should be more effective this week. Edge: Broncos.
When the Saints pass
This matchup between two of the NFL’s top units – Saints passing attack and Broncos pass defense – will bring viewers. The Saints average nearly double the amount of passing yards than the Broncos allow each game. New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees does a great job getting the ball to all of his receivers, particularly the young trio of Brandin Cooks, Michael Thomas and Willie Snead. Denver has shut down nearly every passing offense. Edge: Broncos
Special teams
Brandon McManus is having a Pro-Bowl caliber season with his consistent performance. He made a 55-yard field goal last week with little doubt. Saints kicker Will Lutz has been shaky, missing five field-goal attempts this season. The Broncos need to improve their kickoff returns, which put them in poor field position for much of last week’s game. Denver’s coverage teams have been superb. Edge: Broncos
