U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard left the Americans’ World Cup qualifying match Friday against Mexico with an apparent injury.

The 37-year-old Colorado Rapids goalkeeper appeared to suffer the injury as he attempted to kick a goal kick in the 35th minute with the U.S. trailing 1-0 in Columbus, Ohio.

Howard appeared to clutch his right groin muscle and then lay on the ground for at least a minute. He stayed in the game briefly and made a save, but then immediately signaled for a substitute. He was replaced by Brad Guzan in the 40th minute.

It was not immediately known how the injury would impact Howard’s status for the Rapids’ Western Conference finals series against the Seattle Sounders on Nov. 22 and Nov. 27.

Rapids backup goalkeeper Zac MacMath started 17 games this season for Colorado, posting six shutouts and an MLS-best 0.76 goals-against average.
