Each week, Denver Post preps editor Kyle Newman releases his power rankings. This week’s rankings feature a postseason Power Five for 5A football and 4A football as teams enter quarterfinal play, as well as preseason rankings for 5A and 4A basketball and 5A wrestling.

5A FOOTBALL POSTSEASON POWER FIVE

  1. Pomona (11-1): Said senior free safety Uriah Vigil of the Panthers’ mind-set heading into Friday: “Our main goal is to go one game at a time, and if we make it to that last game, we’re looking for revenge.”
  2. Mullen (9-2): The Mustangs host legendary coach Dave Logan and on Friday, and look for Jovan Tafoya to have a big game with the assistance of running back Marcus McElory and wideout A’Jon Vivens.
  3. (10-1): Senior linebackers Will Kulick and Alec Hamilton will be key in applying pressure to Eaglecrest quarterback Jalen Mergerson in order for the Raiders to advance.
  4. Grandview (10-1): When the Wolves are getting push up front, they’re near unbeatable. But the play of their cornerbacks is also crucial against high-powered .
  5. Valor Christian (8-3): The Eagles have been deploying Luke McCaffrey for big plays more and more lately, and on defense junior Matthew Thibault and senior Christian Elliss are capabale of keeping Grandview running back Hayden Blubaugh in check.

4A FOOTBALL POSTSEASON POWER FIVE

  1. (11-0): After posting a 14-0 win over in the playoff opener, expect quarterback Amon Wright and the Rebels to come out swinging against a physical Windsor team.
  2. Chatfield (10-1): Senior Dalton Keene and junior Matt Moon each ran for two scores in the Chargers’ rout of last week, and it doesn’t look like this offense will be slowed down anytime soon.
  3. Ponderosa (10-1): The Mustangs made a championship statement of their own in a 40-14 win over in the first round, and they’re sure to come out with high intensity again against ready-to-rumble Broomfield.
  4. (9-2): Freshman sensation David Moore III ran for 134 yards and two touchdowns in the playoff opener, and if he continues to do that, the multideminsional Eagles are going to be tough to stop.
  5. Broomfield (9-2): After grinding out a win over Heritage last week, the Eagles needs their senior stalwarts such as running back Jalon Torres to bring their best effort against red-hot Ponderosa.
