Re: Nov. 11 news story.

Is it surprising that after an election featuring the most bigoted rhetoric from a presidential candidate since George Wallace, attacks, both verbal and physical, on minority individuals would increase? When the integrity of the democratic institutions of the United States has been questioned, is it any wonder that civility suffers? Each of us has within him or her both the “better angels of our nature” and the worse. When a presidential candidate models racial and ethnic hatred and misogyny, it brings out the worst in some of us — especially the impressionable young — and poisons the moral underpinnings of our nation as a whole. Once the genie has been let out of the bottle, it is very difficult put him back in.
