A photo of the Pueblo police dog, Widget, and the alleged cocaine shipment.A Pueblo police dog is being credited with sniffing out a major cocaine shipment that was heading to Denver from Mexico.
Authorities say Jose Alonso Calderon Garcia, 34, was stopped Saturday afternoon traveling north on Interstate 25 entering Pueblo when a Pueblo police K-9 officer and his dog, Widget, discovered the drugs.
Garcia was pulled over after being spotted weaving and Widget smelled the cocaine during an “open-air sniff” around the vehicle, police said in a Monday news release.
Officers found 10 packages of cocaine worth an estimated street value of $1.08 million during a subsequent search, investigators said.
Garcia was arrested and taken to the Pueblo County jail on suspicion of possession of drugs with intent to distribute.
