Actor Brandon Victor Dixon, who plays Aaron Burr in Broadway's "Hamilton," addresses Vice President-elect Mike Pence, who was in the audience last Friday night. On Saturday, President-elect Donald Trump demanded that the cast apologize to Pence.

Re: Nov. 19 news story.

President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence have given Hispanics, blacks, Muslims, gays, lesbians and other minorities ample reason to be concerned about whether they have a place in the America that Trump promises to “make great again.” The cast of “Hamilton” expressed that concern clearly and politely.

President-elect Trump should not be chastising the cast for expressing that concern; he should be going out of his way to reassure them that they are valued participants in our democracy and that his administration will do its best to ensure that their contributions are appreciated, their opinions are heard, and their needs are addressed.

Actors from Broadway’s “Hamilton” made a statement from the stage directly to Mike Pence. Then Donald Trump tweeted his demand for an apology for this slight. There will be many real and imagined slights to members of the administration and their policies. Will the president of the most powerful country in the world tweet about each of these slights? Are there no problems in North Korea, the Ukraine, Syria, Iraq, or Detroit that need attention?

When Harry Truman publicly objected to a critic’s comments on his daughter Margaretap singing, it seemed startling and silly to most. Can’t someone in Trump’s entourage tell him that whatever else he feels or thinks, each one of these little manufactured foofaraws diminishes his stature to the other world leaders?
