Re: Nov. 19 news story.

I applaud LauraBoggs, a former Jefferson County school board member, for her eloquent explanation of some possible reasons Jeffco measures 3Aand 3B failed.People are not opposed to the tax itself, but to apoorly written proposal, and perhaps opposing the bigger issue of state-level budgeting. Where is the state money going if we are in the bottom quartile of the country for childhood immunizations and every school districthas to askfor localtax increases? Perhaps the negative factor is not a good way for the state to determine who needs money.

To emphasize Boggs’ point, I do not see how updated lunchrooms with brighter lights and newschools innewer communitiesare going to change third-grade math competency across the county. We need to see a direct correlation between budget proposals and plans for academic competency with competitive salaries, not plans for shiny new buildings that hold behind-goal students.

Regarding the failed mill levy and bond election in Jefferson County, Laura Boggs is quoted as saying that voters want improved student achievement across the district before approving any additional money. That reminds me of the excellent motivational saying used by pirates that states, “The beatings will continue until morale improves.”
