Re: Nov. 18 editorial.

I am excited to see that Interior Secretary Sally Jewell has cancelled drilling leases in the White River National Forest. This is the right thing to do for our climate and for our communities. Jewell has made a positive move toward moving away from the reliance on non-renewable energy.

Coupled with the Clean Power Plan, which sets the first federal limit on global warming pollution from power plants, actions like this are critical to avert the worst impacts of climate change. We need our elected officials taking more steps forward.

In order for these sustainable actions to continue statewide, I’d like to see Gov. John Hickenlooper develop an approach for complying with the Clean Power Plan. Colorado should focus exclusively on energy efficiency and clean, renewable energy to meet the goals of this policy.

Perhaps it is true that the Department of Interior should have gone with the guidelines developed under Gov. Bill Ritter’s administration, but this announcement is just another sad example of the singular assault on the fossil-fuel industry which has become just a political football for folks with a narrow agenda or an ax to grind.
