It was with great disappointment that I read your endorsement of Betsy DeVos as our next secretary of education. Her nomination insults everyone who has ever dedicated their professional lives to serving all of America’s children through public education.
How does a billionaire who dedicated her philanthropy to undermining public education, who resents public schools for “displacing” Christian churches as the center of a community, who promotes using public tax dollars to fund parochial schools because this leads to “greater kingdom gain,” who views public education as a “dead end,” bring any credibility to the position of secretary of education? DeVos supports directing $20 billion of public funds to private schools despite evidence that private schools have demonstrated no advantage over public schools.
You endorse Betsy Devos, who favors religious doctrine over evidence, to drive education policy. Really?

I am incredulous at your endorsement of Betsy DeVos for secretary of education. First, our republic cannot withstand further assaults on its education system. As our last election has demonstrated, we need an educated, analytical and critical electorate. If our republic is to survive, we have to prepare all of our students better for their role as citizens and for life in a highly technological society. Giving up on many of them by removing funding from the public schools through vouchers is not the way to go about this. We need to bring all of our schools up to standard.
