A 36-year-old Weld County recreational vehicle dealer has been indicted on suspicion of stealing nearly $900,000 through his employer, Transwest, through kickbacks.
Prosecutors say an 11-count indictment was handed down against Jeffrey T. Mullins and he was arrested on Nov. 26. He appeared in court Monday to be advised of the case against him.
Prosecutors say Mullins, of Dacono, was working as an RV sales manager for the Transwest dealership in Frederick from the fall of 2011 to June 2015.
“An internal audit showed Mullins would directly receive cash payments, or kickbacks, from buyers and sellers outside of the transaction,” the Weld County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release Monday.
A review of Mullins’ bank records showed he deposited at least $879,925 in kickbacks from individuals and RV dealers who did business with the company while he was employed, according to the district attorney’s office.
Mullins also allegedly filed a false tax return in 2012 and evaded taxes in the following years.
He is charged with felony theft, filing a false tax return, four counts of tax evasion and five counts of failure to file or return or pay tax. Mullins, if convicted, faces up to 18 years in prison, prosecutors say.
