Re: Dec. 5 editorial.

I do not believe the Democratic Party will ever get the message, because they are not even trying to understand the people who have elected Republican governors, state legislators and Donald Trump. Re-electing Nancy Pelosi as House speaker is a strong indicator of this lack of understanding.

Democrats should read two books: “Listen, Liberal” by Thomas Frank and “Strangers in Their Own Land” by Arlie Russell Hochschild.

Frank stresses that the Democratic Party has become a party of elites who have no use for those who have not graduated from a top Ivy League university and been successful in their careers. He explains how the Democratic Party has ignored the labor unions for this and other reasons.

Hochschild looks at why people support the Tea Party and Trump. These voters have been blocked in their goal of gaining the American Dream by actions of the government. She spent five years in the Lake Charles, La., area listening to the people.

Your editorial is way off the mark. We Democrats got the message loud and clear. The new administration got elected on lies and anger. They and the Republican-controlled Congress are going to wreak havoc on our constitutional rights, on public schools, and on the rights of women and minorities. They will work to finish the destruction of the middle class. We’ll likely end up with the world’s largest oligarchy, one ruled by a demagogue who flouts the law and common decency. We must resist. It’s the patriotic thing to do. Nancy Pelosi and the progressives know this. We’re counting on them.
